the last frontier

two amazing opportunities at work have allowed me to travel to alaska twice in the last month. not only were they both great career experiences, but i was also able to see a beautiful state which i may never have gone to see on my own.

being august, there are almost 24 hours of light. it was very strange to be sitting at a bar, the sun still shining, and to look at my watch and realize it was almost midnight. the second visit wasn't so light, and it rained every morning, but by the end of the day's work, the sky was beautiful. everything there is so fresh and clean. there are several peaks that rival rainier, and clothed in pine trees they cover the surrounding landscape and tower above you as you drive through.

here are a few pictures. the first trip we went to the port of whittier and saw a reindeer (or a caribou - i found out later that's what it was, but that's so much less fun!) and we also went on a tour of a lake to see portage lake glacier. massive. it looked like it was about to crack apart based on the sheer weight of the ice pressing down from everywhere.

the second trip was more career networking, but just as fun all the same. i would really love to go back mid-october to help out even more with opening. and maybe even experience some snow!
